HLA - Engineering & Operations

Above the Curve, Below the Radar
Roots of HLA - Engineering & Operations

Harlem Launch Alliance's engineering & operations departments can trace their roots back to 2010 with the founding of the CCNY Aerospace Club. Originally, the club participated in the Cansat Competition until being integrated into the HLA.

HLA - Engineering & Operations past and presently pulls together students from the CCNY chapters of IEEE, ASME, the CCNY Physics Club and the former Planetary & Rocket Science Group. The "A" in "HLA" truly does stand for Alliance.

Design Philosophy

An engineering departments design philosophy is partly decided by the people involved, and partly by circumstance.

Like mostly all amateur collegiate rocketry, the process is fundamentally experimental and hands-on. The same group of people designs, builds and tests equipment.

CCNY engineering organizations have always prided themselves on doing all the manufacturing work themselves. If someone can learn a manufacturing process needed by the department, we'll always favor that over having a third party make it for us.

All equipment fielded by the HLA is Made in Harlem.
